Smart work or hard work

The work of two men in a village was chopping wood. One always said, hard work prevails while the other always said, smart work is the best.

Once there was a wood-chopping match. The competition was that from sunrise until sunset, the wood cutters were to cut down as many trees in the forest as they could. The winner would receive both fame and wealth as compensation.

Both of them were very positive that this was the best day to prove their sayings were right.

The day of the competition arrived and both men consistently chopped from morning until lunch.

By midday, they were neck to neck, then one man stopped cutting and took rest.

When the other guy observed this, he said, “The lazy guy, he’s probably taken a break for lunch. He has given me a chance to surpass him, and I am positive that I will triumph in this competition.” Thus saying, he continued to chop the wood, without taking rest and was starving himself.

The man eventually returned to work.

The Result

As the day progressed, he cut more trees than his hardworking (and hungry) rival, and by mid-afternoon, he had gained a commanding lead.

When the sun went down, the man who had taken the noon break had cut nearly twice as many trees as the other man, who was drenched in sweat, starving, and fatigued.

“How did you beat me?” he wondered.

“You were lazier than me and even took a break and stopped to have your lunch!”

“Yes,” the other man explained, “I took the break to sharpen my axe.”

The moral of the story is, a sharp axe is worth many hours of hard work.

“Smart work will get better results than hard work”
